PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

What is PRP ?

 

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a blood plasma obtained from the person's own blood which is re-injected into the scalp after centrifuged and prepared by using a kit. The PRP contains growth factors.

 

It is an autologous treatment​ that poses no risk to the person even if it is a blood product. It is used in aesthetic medicine, plastic surgery, hair implant surgery as well as in orthopedics to treat sports injuries and to help chronic wounds healing even among veterinarians for the same reasons.

 

PRP for Hair

PRP has been a part of the treatment tools against hair loss for a few years. It can be used for early balding to reduce hair fall and to regrow hair in repeated sessions or during the hair transplant surgery to stimulate the dormant follicles and increase the hair density.

​

Apart from hair transplant surgery, when PRP is done in repeated sessions, it stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of stem cells within the bulge area of hair follicles. Scientific publications cite an increase in density up to 27 hairs/cm2  after 3 sessions of PRP injected in the scalp within the sparse area at 1 month interval.

The patients treated showed a significant improvement with an increase of 18 hairs in the target area and mean hair density increased to 27,2 (number of hairs / cm2) compared to baseline values. A small amount of vascularity around hair follicles in the treated skin is also noticed.

As part of a treatment for androgenic baldness, the effect of PRP lasts for 12 to 16 months after 3 treatment sessions at one month interval. We therefore recommend 3 PRP sessions every 12 months in order to see its beneficial effects on hair density.

The way to perform PRP during surgery can differ from one surgeon to the other: before creating the micro-slots which will accommodate the hair transplants or after creating the micro-slots or even at the end of the surgery. We prefer to apply the PRP after creating the micro-slots, just before placing the grafts. Some surgeons also prefer to keep grafts in PRP solution for 15 minutes before implanting. Scientific publications cite that an increase of 3% to 52% in added density could be obtained 7 months after applying PRP during surgery in a single session.
